We must all accept death but not seek it to be honest conscious human beings.
Life is a miracle which we can only in some senses control and death remains something which no amount of good timing can leave everyone happy.
When/If I lose my health I certainly don't want a pro-assisted dying GP to decide what care I get: I would lose trust in them. Do people with dementia and chronic illness have control over their lives? No - but their carers do. We all want to be in control of our lives and assisted dying gives us control of our deaths, but nothing else in life is so easily controlled. Is it relevant that "Yes" is argued by a radiologist? Even if she is right that 37% of GPs agree with assisted dying (and Dr Finlay disagrees) hadn't the BMA better wait until 50% agree before saying they support the policy? 37% practical no-nonsense types may be happy to sign forms for people but they won't want to spend much time doing it, nor will the courts.Īlready, with the change in certifying deaths in Scotland, less information is required before cremation and I personally feel that more inconvenient details will be hidden by doctors who don't have the time or patience or knowledge of the patient to do the job properly. Assisted dying is yet another job off-loaded to GP.
